Pi Star Selects QSI’s VTERM-G55 Mobile Data Terminal for its PiMobileCADS

QSI Corporation’s rugged mobile data terminal (MDT), the VTERM-G55, is now integrated with Pi Star’s PiMobileCADS and PiMobileRAMP product lines, which are used to service the para-transit and home health care industry. The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal allows Pi Star to schedule client pick ups; monitor vehicle mileage, transit times, location and speed; and send and receive messages to and from the driver. Pi Star is able to communicate with the VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal via an external GPRS and CDMA modem.

The VTERM-G55 mobile data terminal used by Pi Star uses a graphic display and a keypad to interface with the user. The terminal can be equipped with two EIA-232, -422 or -485 serial ports and/or an Ethernet 10Base-T interface. The VTERM-G55 has a 320×240 pixel, color LCD display measuring 96 mm (3.8″) diagonal. (optional grayscale display available) and is viewable in most lighting conditions. Other features include 24-key or 40-key membrane / steel snap dome keypad with LEDs; 2 Mbytes flash / 16 Mbytes SDRAM; programmable speaker and real-time clock. The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal is ruggedized to withstand the shock, vibration, temperature and humidity environmental extremes common in many vehicle-related applications today.

Top Paralympics athletes have shown impressive techniques to using a wheelchair when playing things like basketball, tennis and racing.

Mobility scooters should not be mistaken with electric wheelchairs, as they are two of different equipments. The only similarity is their ability to aid in manoeuvrability, however one is used more for internal use and the other is best used outside and for long distance travelling. These are not suitable for major sports and are only used for the sole purpose of migrating from one area to another.

Mobility scooters, although used only for moving and travelling long distances, are much slower and are good for people with weak upper body strength and physical disabilities in the legs. It is useful for people to use these for low key sporting activities such as golf, that require very little in mobility strength and is a light form of exercise. High impact sports is unsuitable mobility scooter users.

Wheelchair sports has grown to a massive scale, holding Paralympics sporting competitions and seeing wheelchair basketball champions begin to steal the limelight of world sports. The first wheelchair basketball game was founded in the USA of 1944, which was taken part by World War II veterans. This then spread across the globe with thousands of people taking part and spotting. This was also very quickly incorporated with the Paralympics, which was established at the same time by Ludwig Guttmann in England.

Wheelchair tennis was a sport that developed also in the USA and was founded around the late 1970s. This was not an easy development and required much more experimenting with optimising the wheelchair with playing tennis. The founder of wheelchair tennis was a young man named Brad Parks, who upon making a warm up jump on acrobatic skiing, injured himself and was made paraplegic.

Being a wheelchair user he experimented with playing tennis from his wheelchair upon hearing that athlete Jeff Minnenbraker had been playing tennis from a wheelchair. This sparked a strong interest for Parks and on his next rehabilitation session coincidently his therapist was Minnenbraker. They discussed playing tennis and this ensued with Minnenbraker providing Parks with tennis lessons. It became quickly obvious to Parks that a lightweight wheelchair was needed to play tennis and so they began developing design ideas.

Though this was a process, which took time, it soon gained much popularity and attracted fellow wheelchair users to take part. Eventually this became a global activity with the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis being founded in 1980. Since then this has become a popular sporting event, with competitions held every year. The International Wheelchair Tennis Federation was founded in 1989 with Brad Parks as the President of the project.

Sporting events such as these have made it possible for people with physical disabilities to feel more in control and independent.

Electric wheelchairs are wheelchairs powered by a motor. They were created especially for those individuals with limited or no body mobility, or for those who use wheelchairs as their primary source of getting around. They are pricier than manual wheelchairs, but the cost is definitely a wash when considering if your wheelchair needs are substantial.

Electric wheelchairs come in a few styles ÂÂ– the traditional style electric wheelchair resembles a manual wheelchair with the exception of the motor, battery and controls; and the platform electric wheelchair look more like a seat placed on top of the motor encasement.

The motor is often placed below the electric wheelchair in order to minimize any noise. The electric wheelchair controls are usually to the right or left of the arm rests, and can even be repositioned based on your wheelchair needs. People who enjoy outdoor activities regularly may need to be careful in an electric wheelchair ÂÂ– most models are designed for indoor use and can crack or become faulty over time. Sports wheelchairs differ from the traditional manual wheelchair ÂÂ– they are very lightweight and designed to withstand the normal wear and tear that goes along with a number of sporting activities. What to Look for When Choosing a Riser Recliner Chair

If you suffer from mobility problems such as arthritis and back pain, and spend a lot of time in an armchair, you may find it difficult to get in and out of your chair. A rise and recline chair can assist you.

Electric lift chairs rise up so that the user just needs stay almost stood up, and then perch on the edge of the chair and then use the handset to lower the chair into the right seating position. Depending on the model of chair, the footrest will come up automatically so that the body and legs are correctly supported. When you want to get out of the chair, simply use the handset to raise the chair to the standing position again, and get off. Some models of electric lift chair have a back that reclines far enough so that you can safely snooze on it. Riser recliner chairs are also of proven benefit to those with medical conditions such as arthritis and circulation problems. There are manual reclining chair models which as the name suggests are operated by hand rather than electricity. The manual chair has a lever on the side which operates the chair. These might not be suitable for some people, depending on their needs.

The nature of the disability is likely to play a part in deciding which lift chair to choose. A very supportive back rest may be a requirement. The user will need to be able to use and understand the controls. Depending on the model of riser recliner chair, there may be only two buttons on the handset; one to raise the chair, and the other to lower it. If the chair has two individual motors and a heat and massage function, there may be several buttons for the user to learn.

There are different styles and makes and models of mobility chair, ranging from manually operated reclining chairs through to very luxurious chairs that offer many features such as leather upholstery, additional pockets and heat and massage units. Mobility chairs are available in various colours of upholstery, and so you should be able to find a colour that fits in with your existing décor. Leather or leather-look upholstery can be kept clean easier than other upholstery, and might be more appropriate. Some models of rise and recline chairs come with matching settees or other furniture so that your front room furniture matches.

As people are different sizes, rise recliner chairs come in different sizes too. The chair that offers the most comfort and convenience to a petite person probably won’t provide the same level of comfort to somebody who is very tall, and vice versa. It is important to ensure that you get the right size of chair for you, as the wrong chair can do you more harm than good.

The rise and recline chair will usually have one or two motors. If the footrest raises or lowers with the backrest, then there is one motor. If the backrest and footrest operate independently, there are two motors. Models with two motors are usually more expensive, but offer more positions so that you can find your ideal seating position. Depending on the user’s needs, the legs or back may need to be at a certain position, which a single motor chair might not provide.

Modern lift chairs are very reliable and most models even come with a battery back up feature so that user is not stuck in the event of a power cut. The battery will power the chair for two or three lifts only, but will ensure that the user is not left sitting in the incorrect position, and is not stranded. Safety is also very important, so particular attention needs to be paid so that children and others do not play with the rise and recline chair. There is usually a substantial guarantee with mobility chairs, and some manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty.

The location of the riser recliner chair is important. The chair will need to be positioned near a power socket, and the back needs to well away from the wall so that when the backrest is fully reclined it doesn’t touch the wall. If the chair is too near the wall and the back is reclined, the back might not stop when it hits the wall, and so the motor will burn out, which obviously won’t be covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. If the chair is to face a television or other focal point, it is advisable to do this whilst the chair is being set up. Once the chair is set up it is quite difficult to move, especially to a different room, as the back needs to be taken off which can be quite complicated.

For some having a mobility product is a gift sent from God. Not only does the mobility scooters allow easier access when shopping, they also allow the peice of mind that I don’t have to stay at home. I can ride around the neighbor saying hello to the kids, make frequent trips to local stores, as well as visit the mailman at the mailbox without struggling to get there and back or waiting for my busy son or daughter to come over. When I researched the subject more in debt, I found out that the complaint is not the scooters; most are concerned about the battery life. How would you like to know that when you go out for that daily ride or stroll to the park, that you may run out of battery? Here you are stuck in the park or on the road with no communication with anyone, but strangers passing you by looking awkwardly at you wondering what your doing. And to ask for help? I purchased an adjustable bed (without the mattress, remote or manual) at a closeout sale recently. I ordered the remote from Leggett & Platt (Makers of the bed) but I cannot find a place to plug in the remote. How can I find this information online or view a user’s manual online? I’ve searched but cannot find anything. The bed is a Tempurpedic S cape model number 81908 made in 04/06. Thanks.

10 Useful Wheelchair Tips

1. Make Lemons Out of Lemonade - If your wheelchair is a lemon, does not conform to the terms of the written warranty, or the dealer or manufacturer is unable to repair it in the first year, you should check your states wheelchair lemon law. You may qualify for a replacement chair.

2. Rain or Shine - It is not necessary to stay home on a rainy day if you take precautions to protect your powerchair. Cover the hand control with a plastic bag, but exercise caution when using a joystick with a covering on it. Protect the drive motor by avoiding puddles that might splash or submerge the motor. Common sense is the rule, sitting in a powerchair in the pouring rain waiting for a bus is not a good idea, however, rain should not stop you from attending to life’s daily activities such as going to work or a doctor appointment.

3. Get in Your Comfort Zone - It would be nice if wheelchair seats were like our favorite overstuffed chair, but sadly enough they are basically not that comfortable. So, here are some tips on getting close to comfortable. Width of the seat should be as narrow as possible without hips touching the sides. A chair too wide causes bad posture, and affects chair performance. Proper seat depth is tricky. Too deep and you slouch, too shallow and you don’t have enough support and less stability. A sling backrest with adjustable tension will allow you to sit further back in the seat, while a fixed backrest allows you to sit further forward. Seat angle, commonly called “squeeze” is when the seat seat has a permanent slope. Seat angle helps keep your weight in place, and prevents you from sliding forward. It is important to get the right amount of angle because too much can cause problems with discs in the back, curvature of the spine and pressure sores. Most manual and powerchairs have a built in adjustment which will allow you to customize the seat angle. Seat cushions provide comfort, positioning, and prevent pressure sores. The type of cushion you chose will depend on your criteria. Someone who spends all day in a chair will obviously have a different need from someone who may just use a wheelchair to go shopping.

4. All Work and No Play - For housework and cleaning, my advice would be to get your friends and family to do it, but that just is not realistic. Learning to live with a little clutter and coming to grips with the fact that your house may never be as clean as it once was might help with some of the frustration. Make sure that you have accessible outlets!!! Try plugging the vacuum cleaner in when the outlet is behind the couch and you will see why this is so important. Better yet, get a cordless vacuum! If you need to mop, always start in the corner first!! Cleaning the shower is easy with the new sprays that are on the market. Pick up clutter all through the week, it lessens what you have to do during the actual cleaning. Keep a reacher handy to get those socks that are hiding under the bed or items that may have fallen behind furniture.

5. No Need for a Spare Tire - “Flat Free” tires no longer means made of solid rubber! Technology has evolved to include a range from foam filling, to a poly urethane tread to a rubber insert. So, the question is: Which material meets your needs? Poly Urethane tires are used most commonly on manual wheelchairs. They are highly resilient and fairly light. The life span is 3 to 4 times of the traditional rubber tire. Semi-pneumatic tires and inserts feature molded-in air pockets, much like the air pockets in the soles of athletic shoes, providing a slightly cushioned ride. Found in forms ranging from poly urethane tires to inserts, semi-pneumatic tires never need air maintenance, nor will they become flat when punctured, making them truly flat-free. On today’s powerchairs, foam-filled tires, especially on the drive wheels, are the most popular flat-free solution. The foam may vary in density depending on the required weight capacity. Co-molded tires are most commonly found via powerchair casters and low-end manual wheelchair wheels. Co-molded tires are especially useful as anti-tip wheels, where durability is more important than ride characteristics. Co-molded tires have an exceptional lifespan, but the entire wheel assembly requires replacement when worn.

6. Ball in Your Court - Being in a wheelchair should not stop you from getting out there and participating in sports. Wheelchair users are now competing on a professional level. There are numerous wheelchair sports associations. Wheelchair basketball was started over 40 years ago by the Veterans Administration as a rehab program. It has grown by leaps and bounds and is now a sport. There are over 180 teams across the U.S. Quad Rugby is another wheelchair sport designed for quadriplegics who are unable to play basketball. It is a mixture of basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and handball. Power soccer is yet another great sport for those in an electric wheelchair. There are many wheelchair sports accessories available including belts, harnesses, drink holders and special back supports.

7. On the Road Again - For travel, first and foremost make sure that your chair is in good working order. Take it in for a service check. Be sure that your name and address are clearly printed on all removable parts. Use sticky labels, and cover them with a piece of clear tape. If you will be flying, be sure to notify the airline that you are traveling with a wheelchair. Airlines are required by law to stow your chair in the cabin, but don’t count on it if there are multiple travelers with wheelchairs. An alternative is to gate check your chair, this will allow you to wheel onto the jetway where they will tag your chair and stow it in the belly of the plane. Remove leg supports and seat cushion and carry them on board with you. If you are unable to walk onto the plane, be sure to request an aisle chair. Always check your wheelchair for damage on arrival. Be sure to do your homework ahead of time. Check on hotels for handicapped accessible rooms, if you are going to be sightseeing, make sure that there are no barriers, arrive early at bus and train stations. Wheelchair travel can be both challenging and and rewarding, and with a little planning, it will certainly be a adventure that you won’t forget.

8. Stumbling Block - Nobody ever said it was going to be easy being disabled. Learning to cope with the mountain of little obstacles that are so frustrating is a major step in the right direction. If you have diminished hand strength and function, use a wall mounted dispenser with refillable chambers and push button dispensing for the shower. This will eliminate the need for opening and closing bottles with wet hands. If grasping a utensil is difficult slide a piece of 12mm hose over the handle. Outsource your toenails and get a simple trim at the nail salon on a regular basis. Use a reacher to get at those socks from under the bed or behind the couch. Don’t chase your food all over the plate, use a bowl instead. Be sure to carry straws with you if you are unable to pick up a cup or glass. A 3 ft dowel with a rubber cap on both ends works great for turning light switches on and off, ringing doorbells, pushing buttons on tv or as a pushing or pulling tool. Put a thin cord through the hole on your zippers, tie to make a loop. Be sure to join a disabled support group, as they are an amazing wealth of information.

9. Play it Safe - Make sure that your wheelchair is in good condition at all times. The top priority when considering safety are the brakes. Be sure to check them regularly, loose brakes can compromise the wheelchair users safety. Another thing to consider is stability and balance. Some guidelines to follow are: Never lean forward any further than the length of the armrests. If you do lean forward, be sure the front casters are facing forward. Do not try to pick things up from the floor by reaching down in between your knees. Do not shift your weight in the direction you are reaching as the wheelchair may tip over. For ultimate safety, it is important that you be fully contained within the wheelchair. A weakened arm or leg that occasionally drops to the side cannot be considered the ultimate in safety. Arm supports, as well as foot and leg huggers, help you keep it all together.

10. Live and Learn - Become a self advocate. Being a self advocate very simply means that you understand your own disability….you know your weaknesses and strengths, and you are able to convey this to others. So, how do you get started? Write it all down; your weaknesses, strengths, identify your disability, and what you need to do to participate in the things you enjoy, or need. Find out your rights, The American Disabilities Act will spell them out for you. Now comes the hard part for some…….Assert yourself, ask for what you need. What do you have to lose? And finally, follow up, and make the change happen.

It is very HIGH QUALITY. I have owned many scooters and powerchairs. I did a lot of research to find the most reliable low maintence scooter with easy to buy parts, (out of ‘MY’ own pocket), should I need them. And one to handle long drives on hot days here in Escondido, Ca. I drive the heck out of this scootor for long periods. That is what I bought it for. I have a powerchair for short period cool use and travel on busses, trains etc. I get the same 15-18 mile BATTERY range from both my Avenger and my Pride. My Golden Avenger 4 fits into my apartment ELEVATER, goes up and easily drives into my 3rd floor apartment. I also take it grocery shopping up and down normal size isles. In small shops with cramped isles, I drive in and have the clerk fetch what I want. My Golden Technologies Avenger 4 is very rugged, is high quality construction and the design was well thought out.
